Covenant Ministries
Reaching The Deaf and The Blind
About Covenant Ministries
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this information about Covenant Ministries. We are Dr. Todd and Sister Jennifer Cooper, (Sister Jennifer is deaf). Our ministry is to the deaf, blind, and special needs people. Our ministry primarily consist of two things: starting a church for the deaf and blind, and starting a home for deaf, blind, and special needs girls at the present time. In the future we would also like to start a home for deaf, blind, and special needs boys. All in the Birmingham, Alabama area.
Alabama has one of the largest communities of deaf and blind peoples mainly because of its highly rated schools for the deaf and blind. There are approximately 24,500 kids in Alabama's deaf and blind schools. There are around 200,000 deaf people in Alabama, and 100,000 blind people in Alabama. Deaf and blind people are two of the largest unreached people groups in the world. Deaf and blind people are often ostracized by society leaving the church with few to no resources to reach them and many in the church not knowing how to reach out to the deaf and blind. There are very few Fundamental deaf churches, and only a few Fundamental Bible believing churches with a deaf ministry. One reason blind people are so unreached is because of the lack of braille (reading system blind people use) Bibles. Braille books are very expensive. It cost approximately $800 to attain 1 Braille Bible. We plan to get a Brailler (type writer for the blind) and a Braille printing press to print the Bible and sound Christian books in braille.
Unfortunately, since the deaf and blind have been neglected by the church and other parts of society they have gone to worldly activities and other cults. Many deaf and blind communities have founded bars, clubs, and drug activities. Many deaf and blind people have alcohol and drug addictions. We know many of these people personally. Also, the LGBTQ community has targeted deaf and blind people leading many of them to a homosexual lifestyle. And sadly, cults such as the Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons aggresively go after the deaf and blind community causing them to go down a condemned path.
With this great need the Lord has laid on our hearts to start both a deaf/blind church as well as a home for girls. There has never been a more needy time to reach these neglected people. We will preach the gospel and disciple these people in a Biblical way. We will also have a home with Biblical standards for young deaf, blind, and special needs girls. We will care for them and train them to live Godly lives while catering to there needs. Our burden is what Jesus said in Luke 7:22 "...the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
May you prayerfully consider having us present our ministry and have us be candidates for your missions program. Thank you for reading and please keep us in your prayers. May the Lord richly bless you!
